What is Rhinophyma?

Rhinophyma is characterized as having a large, red, bulbous and/or bumpy nose. It is defined as an overgrowth of oil glands, caused by rosacea which causes thickening of the skin on nose. The exact cause of Rhinophyma is unknown, and it is most common in men between the ages of 50 to 70 years old. It is a very treatable condition.

What are the symptoms of Rhinophyma?

The primary symptom of rhinophyma is change in shape and the color of the nose. As time passes, the tip of the nose may turn a very rich deep red color. It may also appear misshapen, bulbous and grow in odd directions. Other symptoms include enlarged pores, thickened skin, lumps, scarring and very dry or oily skin.

How is Rhinophyma reduction performed?

Rhinophyma is performed with electrocautery, which is used to remove unwanted skin tissue on the nose. Laser resurfacing is also used, this helps by smoothing the texture and reshaping the nose back to its normal state. When using these two treatments together, you can expect a very successful reduction of rhinophyma.

What is the recovery like after Rhinophyma treatment?

Combined resurfacing treatment techniques, such as electrocautery and laser resurfacing, typically involve a 2 week period of recovery healing. You can expect some swelling and redness during this time. The swelling and redness is completely normal and you will be given ointment and or medications to use post-procedure.
