What is a Facelift?
A facelift, also called a rhytidectomy, is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries. It is a comprehensive treatment that can address a number of cosmetic concerns on the face, including:
- Sagging in the mid-face region
- Jowls along the jaw line into the neck
- Deep creases from the nose to the mouth
- Fallen or displaced eyelids and/or eyebrows
- Sags, bags, and lines
- Thin cheeks and dulling skin
By removing excess skin, patients can achieve a younger appearance and eliminate wrinkles. Patients who are only looking for results around the cheeks, neck, and jawline may be better candidates for a mini facelift.

What is a Mini Facelift?
A mini facelift is an alternative to the traditional facelift, involving less incisions, a lower price, and a quicker treatment and recovery. However, this treatment produces more subtle results, so patients looking for dramatic age-defying results may prefer a full facelift. A mini facelift does not treat the forehead and the eyes, unlike the traditional facelift. A mini facelift still produces long-lasting results, creating a youthful appearance that lasts up to 10 years.
What is the Facelift Procedure Like?
This in-office procedure takes three to four hours to be performed and can be done under local anesthesia. Typically, however, it is done in a combination of local and twilight anesthesia where the patient is made sleepy and extremely comfortable, but still is awake. Incisions are made within the hairline, in front of the ear and behind the ear, and are placed in such a way that when they heal they fall into the natural lines of the face. Excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is re-fastened to create a more youthful appearance.
How is Recovery After a Facelift?
Sutures dissolve and staples are removed after 14 days. Bandages are placed immediately after surgery but removed the following day, and at this time, the patient is allowed to bathe normally and wash their hair. The patient can expect bruising and edema to last for up to two weeks, after which time any remaining bruising can easily be covered by make-up. There usually isn’t much discomfort or pain after this type of surgery; however, pain medication is usually prescribed and taken if needed.
