Introduction
Plastic Surgery is a surgical discipline comprised of aesthetic (cosmetic)
and reconstructive surgery. Reconstructive surgery is performed on
abnormal structures of the body caused by congenital or acquired defects
to improve form and function. Cosmetic surgery improves the appearance
of the physical body, providing a greater self-confidence and a mental
and emotional well-being.
Historically, cosmetic surgery has been relegated to the elite and
noble. However, with greater societal acceptance and availability,
many individuals today benefit from improving their appearance through
cosmetic surgery.
Pressures to remain competitive in the business world coupled with
society's drive to maintain a youthful, "healthy" appearance have stimulated
the recent interest in cosmetic surgical procedures. Opting for plastic
surgery could be a difficult decision which is why you should consult
an experienced plastic surgeon to help with your decisions and address
your questions. Some questions to explore before deciding to proceed
with surgery:
- What do you hope to realistically achieve through this intervention?
- Are there alternatives to surgery?
- Who are the best candidates for the particular procedure you are
interested in?
- How successful is this procedure?
- How will you look after surgery ?
- What changes will the surgery bring to your lifestyle for short
and for long periods of time?
- Is it going to be an outpatient or inpatient procedure?
- How much does it cost and which financing options are available?
Choosing a plastic surgeon
The choice of a qualified plastic surgeon should not be taken lightly.
In most states, it is legal for any physician who possesses a medical
license to "promote" and "perform" plastic or cosmetic surgery. Many
other sub-specialties are offering certificates to their members
to perform cosmetic surgery including, Dermatology, Oral/Maxillofacial
and Otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat).
A qualified, experienced plastic surgeon is often affiliated with
the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Members of the society
are fully trained in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Miller
is affiliated with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Please
refer to his profile for specific information.
H.W. Mark Miller, MD was voted one of America's Top Plastic Surgeons in 2007 by Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery. He is a member of the American Academy Cosmetic Surgery Associate and the American Society Hair Restoration.
Fees and payment
Cosmetic surgery fees are paid prior to surgery, costs vary
widely with the complexity of the operation and surgeon (i.e.- you may
want to shop around). Anesthesia fees and operating room costs may be
incorporated into the packaged fee or itemized separately. Be sure to
ask your surgeon about these components of the cost. Dr. Miller and Mary Lee Cudd accepts
cash, bank checks and credit cards.
